Offshore Wind, Egmond aan Zee, the Netherlands
It is estimated that near-surface wind energy coutd power the world 20 times over. In The Netherlands, we have 2,328MW of wind energy installed and globally there are over 238GW (2011 figures). That might sound like a lot, but in The Netherlands, renewable energy counts for just 4% of energy production.
Offshore wind potential is huge. It could meet Europe’s energy demand seven times over. Today it makes up less than 2% of installed wind capacity. According to the Global Wind Energy Council, by 2020 it will be closer to 10%. Wind energy is a relatively new technology. As it matures, the costs are reducing and turbines are becoming more efficient.
Wind energy is often faster to install than Nuclear or Hydro energy. Currently it only takes about 2 months to build a 10MW wind farm, but that is only after all the permits, planning and bureaucracy is satisfied. Many wind farmers will tell you the same; this bureaucracy must be simplified to really take advantage of the wind potential in the Netherlands.
